a nice weekend with friends, cakes, and beautiful music. alexis performed on saturday night, and i got pins and needles because her voice is so something i don't have words for. i made a pumpkin cheesecake, and ate a piece of galette du roi. i also received a package filled with the most delicious cookies made by maria, and have already eaten all of them too. i went to cafe coutume for the first time, and had a latte with milk art, and talked bikes and business. i drank a glass of wine that was about eight times the size of a normal french glass.

Finally went to the Liberty shop. Didn't actually go to Primrose Bakery, but the cookbook is sweet. Enjoyed warm bread pudding at the Albion with Claire, who graciously meandered in the rain, showing me some of London's gems. Blog friends are sweet friends.

Finally sent a letter off to an old friend. I have had these transparent envelopes hanging around since my Colorado days, and I was never satisfied with what you could see through them. But the Yoshitomo Nara postcard seems pretty perfect. I like the idea that the postal service would be able to, for once, see what people are writing about. Poor USPS, going bankrupt. Makes me sad. Said letter recipient is also the person who taught me how to make delicious sautéed mushrooms, as seen peeking out from under fried eggs in first photo.

I met my friend for lunch. He reads music like I read books. Except he memorizes them. And I forget what I've read before I make it to the end of a sentence. I recently spent an entire day at JFK airport. I had never seen the flight attendants of Emirates Airlines. I read this recent article after I made a google to see what was up in the New York Times. So fascinating! The crew has to walk through the airport together "in one large, attention-getting group". I saw this woman (and her coworker just before her) pulled away from the group by the window at the Hershey's store. Pretty funny.

This is Evan. I've known him for longer than that beard on his face, and I'm lucky to count him among my friends (he's also married to sweet Jessie). He makes beautiful men's shoes in his basement. I only photographed his first pair, which he referred to as "terrible hippie shoes" (true), and the pair of grey oxfords that are in progress. I am pretty jealous of his double needle Singer machine. I dropped some hints about him making a girl version. I think he told me not to hold my breath. Got to admire the man's honesty.

Until one day when I can buy myself one of the beautiful Scout & Catalogue scarves, I have found a wacky green tie dyed number that doesn't scream so loudly when looped around the neck. I'm also wishing a Lindsey Thornburg cloak will somehow end up in my closet. But again, a $6.99 filler from my favorite thrift store will do (there is a giant hood that I accidentally didn't photograph well). Have you seen the profile on Lindsey Thornburg on Stylelikeu?

hi! how are you? (same as above, but this keyboard's question mark actually works.)

i'm at my parent's house right now. my bedroom is now my mom's "office" (ahem, closet extension), but my parents have been extremely kind to store the rest of my life. i'm not actually allowed to move anything, because my dad has a minor fit each time i do, but when he leaves the house i run to a box and start tearing things out of it.

here are some things i have been reunited with today:
an old typewriter that i used to type my notes with in college (i can't believe it either).
my name tag from the days at the esquire (i accidentally triggered the silent alarm once. no one told me not to push the button under the counter. imagine my surprise when the cops showed up in between scooping popcorn and slinging soda pop).
a scarf from jenny (i've been wearing it every day since i unearthed it)
my souvenir spoon collection (l-r: ; kansas; four-way casino, nv; wyoming, san diego, ca; arizona; hollywood)
the name tag from my camp counselor (i thought we would be married by now).

I've known Jenny for a long long time. We magically crossed paths a few years ago in New York. I've always known her as a maker of special things, so I knew when she told me she had been designing jewelry it would be something else. We were pen pals in high school and I cherished the packages that would arrive in the mail, covered with the most beautiful handwriting.

right down the street from my auntie's house is the home and studio of frank lloyd wright. i toured the place and was disappointed by their rules: no pictures and no touching. here are pictures from the exterior, including the ginkgo tree that wright brought back from japan. when he planted it, it was only four inches in diameter. i made some notes about the stencils in the master bedroom designed by louis sullivan. the house is pretty special, with rooms designed to children's proportions, and a piano built into one side of a wall.

i also read about wright on wikipedia after the tour guide told us some factoids about his less attractive qualities.

after, i rode my bike around the neighborhood to scout other wright-designed homes and came across a man excavating treasures from an enormous home. he saw me eye-balling the shoes and said, "fyi, those are a size 7 to 7.5". i was already trying to figure out how to attach them to my bicycle.

fun date at the art institute with my ten-year-old cousin. we started by looking at the thorne miniature rooms in the basement (the second is a french salon. there is a tiny eiffel tower in the window view). anything miniature is exciting to me. the other day at target (something else i missed in france) i found the cutest miniature tin nivea cream.

i had been waiting to see the modern wing since it wasn't open last time i visited. my favorite part was the small ana mendieta collection. it reminded me of my college days when i first discovered women artists.

life in the midwest is good. i saw lake michigan this weekend and remembered how big it is. was sad for my abbreviated childhood, and then quickly stopped feeling sorry for myself. promised myself i would be a fun cousin. pulled my cousins in a wagon and watched the first harry potter (my aunt has reading before viewing regulations for her children. it was really fun to hear a kid's perspective on how her imagination was different from a movie).

enjoyed my family. adjusted to a new, early schedule that young children keep.

the swim was like any other, even though it was the last. grandpa told me about how he got to where he is today. i love stories, and my grandpa knows how to tell one. all dramatic pauses and serious eye contact. he's a lawyer, so i guess that makes sense. i wonder if there are any great story-telling sandwich makers.

the alice waters book is fantastic. she started chez panisse when she was twenty-seven. i am so behind.

twenty-one years later, and my grandparents are moving out of their home. i wasn't here to say goodbye to it with all the things that made it home still inside. but grandma still sweeps the carpet in beautiful triangular patterns and wallpaper fades when you weren't even looking. the weird pictures i took before my grandpa turns the keys over tomorrow. i think we'll go for one last swim in the pool in the morning.

i am broken-hearted over many things this summer. things change and i didn't prepare for that. and favorite giant wall art made from my grandpa's matchbook collection being bought by someone at st. vincent de paul is among many ways my heart breaks.

this weekend, a visit to my uncle and his family. i admire their lifestyle--chickens, a swimming hole, farming, and soon to be cows for milking. and lots of little ones, who are the most loving family i've been around. i worked hard to get the youngest, sweet essie, to hold my hand. winning the love of a three year old is the best ever. my grandpa brings chewing gum, which works like a charm. the children sang together, we toured their property-feeding chickens and fish, and ate grilled corn.

i made my first blueberry pie, which is an audacious move going into mennonite territory. i also made enough potato salad to feed an army.

this is a closed home. from the outside it's easy to believe that no one is inside.

i thought i might get to cook while i am here, but grandma keeps a tight grip on her kitchen. if she hears the refrigerator door open, she comes to investigate. all dishes used to prepare a meal are washed before the meal is eaten. she told me my mom used to make a mess in her kitchen. that was nearly thirty years ago, and she still hasn't let it go. i don't really want to get on her bad side.

one traumatic flight on a plane operated by a hamster later, and i've arrived home. i'm not from here, but it's the only place that i can count on things being exactly the same as when i left them. except the people i come to visit get a little older.

that's michigan out the airplane window, and those are my grandparents. lunch, for as long as i can remember, consists of tuna fish, salad, and a plate of fruits which my grandfather stabs at with a fork. grandpa leaves for his siesta, and grandma and i sit and talk. which is what we do most of the time i am here.

this time, so far, i've heard stories i've never heard before. including the one about how when they first moved here from brasil, my grandpa took my grandma out on a date. to the grocery store.

at the met to see the a. mcqueen exhibition. knocked our socks off, although we did have a moment afterward where we tried to shake the kind of creepy music that follows you through the galleries, and culminates in a hologram of kate moss.

we walked through the ancient greek and roman hall before heading upstairs for the show. there were art students sketching in their notebooks, and i felt a little jealous. the crowd of people makes it feel a bit like herding kittens, but it's so worth it. the gallery setting itself is marvelous.

i pondered taking a few quarters out of the wishing well. after all, i threw in some euro coins, so with the current exchange rate...nevermind.

there is a man named morris barkey, age 92, who lives at luna park. he told us what coney island used to be like, how he used to go smooch with the ladies at steeplechase, how he'd fought in a war, and how he could play any tune we named--"but just the right hand".

we couldn't get away, but we didn't actually want to get away. we left and came back, and when we returned morris was sitting on a bench looking out at the water, waiting for his next new best friends to arrive.

we also watched men fishing and not catching anything. kids jumping off the pier that was marked 'no diving'. a little league game.

i think today marks my best trip to the end of the Q train.

my pink bike is having a love affair with isa's lavender bike. every time they are parked together we take pictures (this one is particularly special because there is an unidentified second pink bike!). having a bike in the summer is the best - unexpected rainstorms included.

So I'm still working out a lot of the details, because I have the computer skills of an eighty-year-old, and Wordpress can be trying (and I'm doing French and English texts). a woman named kitty (darling) from hahvahd (darling) explained to me what 'expat' means (right), and was shocked that i had never been to dinner at jim's. while slurping a delicious hippified borscht, kitty and jesse and i chatted about cooking and eating, and writing.

there was a crazy scotsman in a tracksuit and mirrored shades, among other men who were definitely there to do some flirting. including a canadian "art buyer" who proposed marriage. i later overheard some other girls saying they had been proposed to as well.

the best treat was jim himself, of course, who reigned over the evening in a checkered apron with his name patchworked on it. he ate along with the rest of us, and graciously obliged when i asked for a photo with him, asking, "clothes on, or off?".

when we left, we each had a slightly shocking, but hilarious anecdote from the evening. a night well spent. jim asked me to come back and cook one sunday. i'm already planning my menu and how to cook in summer camp proportions.

(after reading this on thank you, ok, i put dinner at jim's on my list of things to do. which i think some people refer to as a bucket list, but those two words together give me the heebies).

first time at the grand palais was definitely not a disappointment. we imagined seeing karl's show there, or prince. but anish kapoor's sculptures! they make you feel funny inside.

after spending all this time craning my neck to catch the glass ceiling when riding my bike home, i was pretty thrilled to finally see the entire thing.

there is a carte fidélité monumenta for 10€. what a bargain. i could come here every day.

i kicked myself for not having a camera with me. i walked from montmartre after super café time with sweet t (moustache in entrance featured above). then i found the cité des fleurs (near metro brochant) by chance. catherine deneuve and her sister françoise dorléac were born there in 1943. i haven't spent a lot of time exploring the cités in paris, but they are so special. this one is pedestrians only, and no dogs allowed, either. if i could live anywhere in paris, i think it would be the 17éme. and if some property opens up in the cité des fleurs, well you know.

we drank delicious tomato juice that was mostly fantastic because it was delivered with celery salt, tabasco, and worcestershire sauce.

i found a globe that lights up! in french!

ma vie en rose.

i'm going to miss it. waking up in the red room. red nails on the feet of anaïs. the pink legs of the girl i raced on a saturday night (i won on a lark-she couldn't reach the pedals!). and the mini working overtime (we then fit three adults and three bikes in as well. like a clown car).

isabelle hosted a competition for smile! and save the planet. it was really fun. and i won new straps for my pedals!! the pictures should be up soon over there.

elegy for a new skirt

photos taken of my new leather skirt. five euro at guerrisol. (side note: shopping competition is getting stiff at this particular location on ave de clichy.)

anyway. it was beautiful. then i sliced it on a license plate. i don't even know how that is possible. i blame the scooter that was parked on the sidewalk in my leather skirt swooshing way. must find superior leather craftsman in paris to patch it up.

i'm friends with billie on facebook. this is a beneficial friendship for me. i get : funny cat videos, art stuff i would never find on my own, and her fabulous tenue du jour photographs. this woman knows her way around a goodwill. and reminds me of the best things about my crayola crayons from childhood. except she never puts her crayons back in their color-segregated quadrants. and that's what i love about her outfits.

there's a wall in st germain that always has interesting stuff to look at (right by bar du marché on rue de seine). i wanted ice cream something bad today and waited in line at grom forever. line didn't move so i left. i'm still regretting it.

messages from the tv. i can't believe the programming on normal tv here. last night i watched a program that would have embarrassed me if my grandma had walked in. i mean, that also has something to do with my puritan upbringing.

a nice mosaic i ride by every day and finally photographed.

and nails. it was for the photoshoot last week, but i think i will do it again because i like the feeling of having jellybeans on my fingertips.

fell in love with paris again tonight. went to see minuit à paris with my aussie pal and we both left with giant smiles on our faces. the french audience seemed to like it too, but i wish i understood why they all laughed when gad elmaleh showed up as a private detective. it was fun to know all of the different places it was shot, especially because i thought the fifth was a downer when i lived there, and that no one ever goes to the sixteenth, except me. and how great is the bath robe scene?

preparing for a shoot with françois tomorrow.
very excited about a trip to hema for supplies (that store is so great, but you fall into the ikea/h&m mentality-oh! it's so cheap, i'll buy it!). i picked up some broad-striped green and white napkins. which i'm not sure if i'll use for the shoot, but i love looking at them anyway. i also bought a black and white striped apron after seeing katie's pictures of (comme des garçons) aprons at rose bakery on thank you, ok.

i had a dream that i had lots of stuffed animals on my bed, and everyone was calling me a baby. strange, because normally i hide my stuffed animals before people come over to my house.

morning in bois de boulogne. i am dying to get out on those canoes. when i was little i went to fine arts summer camp, and so missed out on the mosquitos, cabins, and canoes that typically go with summer camp. instead i was introduced to theatre, music, and things for ladies.

i have coordinated the plastic bag covering my bike seat to match my bike. class act.

cooking of whole foods this weekend. had free reign over someone else's panier bio! while listening to cherie fm - it's the station that's ok to listen to at the office, if you catch my drift (careless whisper, xo).

a loaf of zucchini bread made with farine de sarrasin. that sarrasin packs a mighty strong punch.

brown rice with adzuki beans, carrots, and parsley. i made a courgette/gingembre/citron vert dressing.

granola made with four euro almonds. i love 4 euro almonds. totally kidding. french nut dilemma.

and the makings of bread pudding. note to self : don't listen to the natural food store guy's recommendation that sesame bread will make good pain perdu. it just isn't true.

'where are you from?'

i think it's the easiest question to ask a person.

i was born in indiana. and when i tell french people this, most people think i'm from india. which would be infinitely more interesting than being from indiana. i recently met melissa, also an indiana girl (we call ourselves hoosiers in indiana), here in paris. she's a photographer, loves her grandma like i love mine, has the cutest dog, and reminds me what it's like to find this city an exciting and not-at-all intimidating place.
